S.O.S Backup uses the MySQLDump utility to perform online backup.
In the MySQL database properties, enter your user name and password, host, file log, and check if it's "full." S.O.S Backup will then automatically find the Dump utility.
You can also set additional parameters depending on your knowledge of MySQL.

Files larger than 2GB can be sent without compromising the integrity of the sent file.
When you need to perform a backup after an event or action outside of the S.O.S Backup program, you can execute a backup job through a DOS prompt or batch file (.BAT).

Copies sent directly to CD/DVD
When the daily data does not exceed 650 MB (CD capacity) or 4 GB (DVD capacity), automatic backups to CD/DVD is an easy and cost-effective way to store and restore information.
When creating direct copies, zip files, or partitioning the data to several CDs/DVDs, you can set a burning speed or choose the fastest available option; configure a temporary backup folder; and select which burner to use.

Configurations to make backups of open files (works for several types of files: xls, doc, ...)
This and future versions of the program can back up open files. The database backup may not maintain the cross table integrity, but it will create a copy.
Some file types opened in exclusive mode might not allow itself to be copied.

New way to define sources and exclusions
To add a source or an exclusion, now you can simply click on the corresponding name for the folder or file. This change has made it easier to add or exclude files and folders in different locations.
Multiple tape drives and CD burners on the same computer
You are no longer limited to using one single tape drive. In the destination, select to what tape drive to save the backup. This version also allows the use of several CD/DVD drives.
The entire database system -- including its software configurations and a complete history detailing the actions that succeeded and failed -- is saved so that the administrator can stay updated on the state of the backups.
Each job saves a list of the files that were copied in the backup.

Generate and print summarized or detailed history
The history log has new options.
Export: S.O.S Backup can export the backup history (by saving a text file and/or sending an email) with these options:
- Export only when there are errors or warnings: only export the history if something goes wrong with the backup process.
- Export only information from the last performed backup: export only the information about the last backup (and not the entire history). Select this option to minimize the size of the generated text file and/or email.
- Include events: the export will include the events of each action.
- Include file list: files related to each of the actions will be included in the exportation.
Print: lets you choose which actions to print (all or only the selected actions) and what to print about each action (events and /or files).
Partitioning backup also on tapes
This version can now partition backups on tape. If a tape becomes full during a backup, the system will request a new tape and store the rest on this new volume.
Important: to restore the data you will need all the tape volumes.
When the backup is being created on a tape, a box will appear with the option to eject the tape once the process is finished. You may also select the "Eject only when there are no errors" sub option.

Compression by software for tapes
If your tape drive cannot compress data by hardware, S.O.S Backup can do it through software. You can choose the compression rate-- the higher it is, the more will fit on the tape, taking longer to save. Software compression not only maximizes the storage capabilities of tapes that can't compress by themselves, but is also immune to tape drive incompatibility problems.
To use software compression on a specific job, just edit the job and select the corresponding option. There is no problem with mixing compressed and not-compressed backups on the same volume.

The center of S.O.S Backup's main window shows the configured backup jobs. Each backup job is represented visually by an object – an icon or a line – in the same way that Windows Explorer shows files. You can define how the jobs are shown and their order in the View menu.

Multiple backup destinies (temporary file features)
When performing the backup in .ZIP format, you can optimize on time and network usage by creating the .ZIP file in a temporary folder. After creating the backup, a copy of the .ZIP file is sent to the final destination. This copy can be sent to several different destinations, including FTP.
Incremental Backup (attributes, days)

Select this option to make an incremental backup of the source files. In other words, of the files that were modified in a certain period (this period can be one of the two following options).
Only files with the “Archive” attribute turned on: the backup will include only source files that have the “Archive” attribute selected. After the backup, the files included in the process will have their “Archive“ attribute turned off. (above image, to the right)
Only files changed in the last X days: the backup will include only the files that have been modified in the last configured number of days. For example: if you choose 0 days, it will include in the backup files modified on the current day (starting at midnight); If you choose 1 day, it will include the files modified after midnight of the previous day; and so on.
Differential Backup (attributes, relation to Complete)
Choose this option to make a differential backup of the source files. In other words, of the files that have been modified since the last complete backup. The two options below define the inclusion criteria for the files.
Only files with the “Archive” attribute marked: the backup will include only the files with the “Archive” attribute turned on. Afterwards, the files included in the backup will keep the “Archive” attribute turned on.
Only files with the date newer than the last full backup: the backup will include only the files with a modification date posterior to the last complete backup.

S.O.S Backup stores the logs in its databases and can show which files were copied and the events of each backup action. There are three exportation options:
Include events: with this option, the log will display only a detailed history of the events.
Include file list: the log will list the files included in the backup.
If none of the above options are selected, the log will list only the date and hour of the event.

You can define an e-mail address to which to send the histories. These will be created according to the schedule you program (for system histories) or automatically after a backup (for job history).

Option to remove error/warning status from a job
The program icon (a red cross next to the taskbar clock) provides important information about the backup status: when an “E” or a “!” appears over the icon, it means that a problem occurred during the backup (signalizing, respectively, an error or a warning). This feature makes it easy to monitor the backup: you just need to look at the red cross icon. If there is a problem, an “E” or a “!” will appear over the job's icon.
You can decide to remove the error/warning status.

You can define the updating criteria (automatic or not) of the job's corresponding backup type (complete, incremental, or differential):
Launch time: sets the time for an automatic backup.
Launch interval: sets an interval of time between each automatic backup, using a beginning and end date.
Frequency: sets the criteria for job updates. It can be:
Daily: the backup will be automatically updated every "x" days at the programmed launch time (explained above). Additional backup update times can be scheduled by selecting "Specify."
Weekly: the backup will be automatically updated every "x" weeks on the chosen weekdays (immediately below) at the Launch time (explained above).
Monthly: the backup will be automatically updated on the chosen day of the month, in the selected months (immediately below) at the Launch hour (explained above).
Only once: the backup will be created on the beginning date at the Launch hour (explained above). Afterwards, it will perform the backup only manually.
At program start: the backup will be automatically updated whenever S.O.S Backup starts up.
Before logging off: the backup will be automatically updated before logging off-- therefore, when turning off or restarting the computer.
Only manual: the backup will not be automatically updated. It will only be updated when the user clicks on “Update” on the toolbar.

Using the backup versions feature allows the user to mantain multiple backups of the same data, preventing the risk of overwriting data with a new backup.
Add to destiny: this lets you generate several versions of the same backup job. If this option is not enabled, the .ZIP file will be overwritten every time the backup is updated.
Date and time: select this option to include the complete date (date and time) to the destination file's name.
Date: select this option to add the date to the destination file's name.
Month: select this option to add the month to the destination file's name.
Day of the month: select this option to add the month's day to the destination file's name.
Day of the week: select this option to add the weekday to the destination file's name.
Nothing: select this option if you do not want to use backup versions. In this case, the destination file will be overwritten with each backup.

The user can choose for the computer to automatically log off, restart, or turn off after a backup is created.

Before starting the scheduled backups, the program will display a progress window showing the file search, with the number of files and the total size.
Similarly, when you request to restore a .zip file, the program will display a progress window with the file structure before continuing with the restoration.
